This EATSperience of ours is another first for EATSplorations. Yes, it’s our first time to ever set foot in Shangri-La at the Fort and also our first EATSperience at their Chinese fine-dining restaurant, Canton Road. In this edition of EATSplorations, we will be sharing with you the new dishes that Canton Road will be launching for this month of April. Every 3-4 months, Canton Road takes a look at their menu to see which ones perform the best and which ones need to take a little break or have an improvement. There were a total of 16 dishes and 4 kinds of tea during this preview. As expected, we were stuffed to the brim after the day was over. Join us and find out which of among the NEW DISHES of Canton Road in Shangri-La at the Fort our tummies loved, enjoy!

A combination of modern and classic interior is what welcomed us when we arrived at Canton Road. The color hues were pleasing to the eyes and the elegant interior gave a relaxing vibe. The warm approach from their staff made us feel comfortable right away. And having set that kind of impression, we knew that we are up for a special EATSperience. Are you ready for a feast at Canton Road? Let’s EAT!

Jasmine Blossoms Tea

The first set of dishes featured a wide range of light and refreshing dishes. It was a great way of being introduced to what kind of EATSperience we will be having at Canton Road. We enjoyed the great variety of flavors and fresh and colorful ingredients presented through these first four dishes of Huaiyang cuisine heritage. Our hands down favorite among the four dishes was the 24-hour marinated salted duck. We loved it because of the familiar flavor combination and of course, the super tender duck. The jasmine blossoms tea was a great way to end the first part of this EATSperience to just clean the palate up a little bit and get it ready for the next set of dishes.

Canton Garden Iced Tea

This set of dishes is probably the set that we loved the most. Every dish in this set made us eat more and more. The soup was light yet really flavorful. Thanks to the braised and minced Angus beef. The radish cake with XO sauce was just a thing of beauty. So simple yet so good! The US beef short ribs were just super tender. It also had a great balance of sweet, salty, spicy flavors. The sponge cake was already very tasty on its own but was more refreshing, fragrant and citrus-y made by the outstanding lemon and osmanthus (tea olive) dip. The Canton Garden iced tea was a great refreshment after a set of dishes with stronger flavors.

Stir-fried Rice Noodle Roll and Bean Sprout in XO Sauce

This set of dishes had bolder flavors and it was more filling. The xiao long bao was extremely huge that we had to use a straw to sip the soup. The la mian noodles with dried shrimp infused in shallot oil seemed simple but it was really fragrant and the shallot oil made it super flavorful. Among all the dishes in this set, our favorites were the deep fried spicy anchovies and crispy garlic, and the stir-fried rice noodle roll and bean sprout in XO sauce. The deep fried anchovies were not greasy at all and the crispy batter was really tasty. And for the stir-fried rice noodle roll, we liked the smooth texture of the noodles and how it was able to absorb the spicy yet flavorful XO sauce. We were not able to take a photo of the tea for this set, but what was served was wild chrysanthemum. This tea cleansed the different flavors that we have had, in time to prepare our palate for dessert.

Dessert

Walnut Soup with Black Sesame Glutinous Rice Balls

After having a feast, it was time for dessert. The walnut soup was creamy and sweet, and the black sesame filling in the glutinous rice balls was fragrant and bittersweet. Canton Road’s version of a classic Chinese dessert had a good balance of flavors which made this dessert really interesting. The tequanyin classic tea was served after to cap off a great meal.
